I want to start by thanking each of you for your support. The Atheist Candidate Project had a plan that some considered radical, but we believe that putting Humanists in public office is a necessary venture. That being said, this was simply not our time.
In consulting with other leaders of non-partisan political organizations, I have come to find that elections-focused Atheist political organizations are not the only specialized organizations having difficulty raising money. The general consensus seems to be that out country’s limited attention and resources are justifiably focused on a much larger crisis, a struggle to preserve fundamental American values and the democratic institutions that have stood as a bulwark against authoritarianism in the United States. I have even found myself directing more money to the ACLU and other non-partisan organizations dedicated to preserving and advancing the cause of basic civil liberties, human rights, and justice.
This does not change the mission of the Atheist Candidates Project. In all honesty, I can empathize with the hard decisions our cohorts make with their time and their resources. We want to normalize atheists in public office, but its hard to be so narrowly focused while so many suffer continued and escalating injustice at the hands of our current leadership. Frankly, if we are to claim Humanism, we would be failing to live up to those values if we refuse to set our pursuits aside to proclaim “Black Lives Matter”, “migrants deserve basic human rights”, and “elected officials must be held accountable”. We would be failing as Humanists if we refused to act in support of those who are facing the most urgent injustices.
In March of 2020, we stopped accepting new donations. Donations to the Atheist Candidates Project will continue to be suspended until after the 2020 elections. For now, we are not asking you to stop contributing to building a better society. Instead, please donate your time and energy to supporting organizations that have the most urgent need. Humanism is bigger than the atheist movement, and it is our responsibility as Humanists to look beyond ourselves in our efforts to a better world.
The Atheist Candidates Project will reassess the political environment in 2021. For now, lets strive to be better humanists. Your compassion is needed by those on the margins of our society, many of whom are, today, facing some of the greatest struggles of their lived experience.
Thank you again for your support and commitment to the cause. We’ll see you in 2021!
